5 Training Programs Every Business Needs

Truth be told, there can be some reluctance toward offering training programs at work. Additionally, they require time and money, so some companies avoid organising such events in their workplace.

Business owners may think that they will only lose their budget and that their employees won’t see it as a workplace perk, but as just another task.

That certainly is a risk, but will only happen if you don’t ask your employees about the type of training they want. You will be surprised how much people are eager to learn, if they feel the new skills will help them with their careers.

Professional development means better chances for promotions, pay raises and improved career. That is why offering training to your employees will also boost their loyalty, satisfaction and productivity. If you are wondering where to start, here are the five training programs that you should offer to your employees.

Managed First Aid Training

While there are many interesting types of training out there, both general and specific for your company, you should start with the basics. The basic requirement of every company is workplace safety.

That is why you should definitely offer managed first aid training to your employees. There are even legal requirements for First Aid that say companies should have a certain number of First Aiders on site.

Managed First Aid Training from Alsco Australia is a very good idea for several reasons. You can be rest assured that the training you receive will be valid, up to date and certified. Moreover, Alsco trainers will tailor the course according to your company needs. We will:

  • Recommend the number of trained first aiders you need.
  • Train any additional staff you may need trained.
  • Customise the training so that it matches your specific workplace.
  • Ensure your first aiders stay up to date with every relevant legal change.

This is not a skill that is just important for the workplace. It is also something that can be used in your employees private lives. Let them know what learning first aid also means for them and their families and also their coworkers.

Specific Technical Skills Training

This is going to be quite different depending on the industry of your business. Technical skills training will not be the same for a dentist’s office and an automotive shop.

For example, a dentist’s office may offer training in using new technology to install dental implants in their patients. On the other hand, automotive shop owners may introduce new technology for car cleaning or training for using new devices.

Different office based workplaces might offer training in social media marketing, copywriting and similar courses that will assist in career advancement.

Project Management Training

Management positions are usually short term or long term plans of all employees. If that is to happen, those employees need to know how to project manage.

This can be the first step towards their desired direction. Giving your employees the opportunity to attend project management courses will encourage them to stay in the company that cares for their future and career.

Problem-Solving Skills Training

Isn’t problem solving something most people think they can do? You will find a great deal of people who claim that they can solve their own problems, as well as the company’s issues. However, if that were true, there wouldn’t be any problems left to solve.

Problem solving skills are considered to be one of the most important soft skills. These skills are not technical in nature. Soft skills are communication skills, time management, emotional intelligence, problem solving, etc.

When you think about it, working actually consists of problem solving on a daily basis. Becoming better at problem solving means becoming better at your job. It is all about identifying the problem, coming up with alternative ways to solve it and picking the best possible solution.

Sounds easy enough, right? Sometimes it is, but sometimes this process is extremely stressful and difficult. Improving your problem solving skills will reduce work related stress and makes your workplace a much more pleasant place to be.

Presentation Skills Training

Once your employees have been trained on how to solve problems, manage projects and learn new skills, they will soon start coming up with fresh ideas. However, ideas are nothing if they’re not presented in the right way. That, again, is one more skill that should be mastered.

That is why presentation skills are necessary for any striving employee. These skills are rarely taught in school and standing in front of a group of people and “selling an idea” is not something that comes naturally to everyone. It is a skill to be learned and that is precisely why you should offer such training to your employees.

However, you should start with basic managed first aid training and go from there. Alsco Australia will help you with first aid training, as well as your first aid supplies.

We have a lot of experience with marrying the specifics of each workplace with legal first aid requirements in Australia. Call Alsco Australia and get the best possible quote for your business.

7 Insanely Fun Activities You Can Do at Work

Ever thought of boosting office morale with some fun workplace activities or fitness initiatives?

If it hasn’t been on your agenda already, you should definitely consider it. Looking after your people is always a sound business decision and one of the most effective ways of fostering a positive workplace culture.

Creating a work culture that promotes physical activity at work does wonders for employees’ health and well-being. Especially with employees who are time-poor and struggle to fit physical activity into their busy schedules.

Getting your people moving also adds momentum to your workplace productivity . Stockholm University research findings show that exercising at work helps employees perform better.

And as long as workplace hygiene requirements are met, you have a huge number of options to choose from.

Yes, introducing new things can prove challenging. Especially with activities that sound strenuous and not necessarily fun. The trick is to make it fun – it’s all in the attitude and enthusiasm is infectious – even when it comes to corporate fitness goals.

Motivation is the key! Inspire your team with the help of this list of simple and insanely fun on-site activities! We have carefully curated a selection of excitement-packed activities for you and your team.

1. Stretch Them With Some Yoga

Yoga is popular for a reason. It brings an array of health benefits to those who practice it, and science is there to support this. It’s well known for its stress-relieving effects, improving heart health and more.

US health insurer has Aetna reaped the benefits of on-site yoga classes for its employees for years.

“The results include improvements in heart rates and increased productivity, and helped Aetna reduce its employee health benefit costs by 7 percent in 2012,” Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini reported to The Huffington Post.

You can encourage your own staff to take up yoga classes by hosting a visiting yoga practitioner. Whether in your boardroom or outside – before work or during the lunchbreak.

Debby Lewis, the director and yoga teacher of Corporate Yoga Australia says everybody can do yoga. Age, shape or size are irrelevant.

You just need an experienced practitioner who will help you tailor the classes to your level of physical fitness.

Debby simply says that consistency is paramount.

“The time of day is not important – morning, lunch or afternoon. The key is to find a time that works for you and incorporate it as a regular part of your week – scheduling it like you would a meeting to ensure that you are not double booked or find something “more important” to do.” – Debby Lewis

2. No Time for Long Workouts? Try These 2-5 Minute Fun Workplace Activities.

Scientists say sedentary careers that require 8 hours a day of sitting lead to increased risks of premature death by up to 60%.

They recommend one hour of physical activity daily to neutralise the bad effects of the sedentary lifestyle.

But for many working people, this amount of activity is simply not doable. So short, 2-minute office exercise routines could be the best option. Check out this inspirational video for short office workouts and get your people moving.

If you have a little more time, Maria Brinaki of FitnessReloaded recommends starting out with as little as 5 minutes a day. Then work your way up to 30 minutes very gradually.

Beware of setting unrealistic goals and getting trapped in what Maria calls The Cycle of Frustration.

It’s what happens when you fail to maintain workout consistency over and over again. The point is, she says, to make the workout a habit – the success may be gradual, but what counts is that it’s a long-term-gain.

Energy company ConocoPhillips offers something for everybody – including the not-so-exercise-loving workers. Their on-site wellness centre hosts an I don’t really want to sweat class to get even the least athletic employees started on the road to greater health.

3. Move Like Jagger!

OK, so maybe not quite as cool as Mick but moving nonetheless!

If it’s fun you’re after, consider offering Zumba classes. This kind of fun-charged activity can really get people engaged.

Dancing is fun! It brings people together, gets the heart pumping and helps relieve stress. After one of these classes, your employees will return to work reinvigorated and energised.

Google gets the party started for their employees by offering on-site How to dance at a party lessons.

The trick with these high-intensity activities is to ensure you have clean and accessible washroom facilities with showers. Introducing a wellness program without installing showers at your workplace is not going to work. So make sure to provide necessary facilities and keep hygiene levels high.

Fresh & Clean specialises in keeping your workplace washroom clean and sparkling at all times. From deep-cleaning to always making sure your supplies are refilled.

4. Pump It Up With These Fun Workplace Activities

Create a colorful and engaging chart and invite employees to make a weekly cardio commitment. After each cardio workout, they get to tick off their progress. It could be cycling, treadmill, stairs, anything – whatever is easy to do at your workplace.

Or start a challenge to encourage friendly interpersonal motivation. It can be any physical activity.

For example, at HVAC.com they launched a push-up challenge. This 30-day challenge involved the whole office, Facebook posts, and was such a hit they followed it up with a sit-up challenge.

5. Try Team Building Activities With Balls

Organise fun and engaging basketball ‘tournaments’ at your workplace. People often enjoy the competitive, but friendly, element that shooting a few hoops can bring to their lunch break.

You could even get coloured (and branded with your corporate logo) vests done so employees can team up and make it more interesting. Put a leader-board in the lunchroom and arrange some sort of ‘trophy’ or prize at the end of the year for the best performers and team, and even some MVPs or Most-Improved.

6. Motivate Employees’ Activities With Ping Pong

Ping Pong, or table tennis, is pretty much a staple of many cool workplaces – especially the tech start-ups and progressive corporates who tend to put a lot of focus on work-life balance.

Not only does table tennis keep our brains sharp, it’s also a great way to bond with colleagues.

So if you have the room, add some action to your office space and install a ping pong table. It’ll be a magnet for mingling and fun socialising and will help employees maintain their energy levels.

7. Let Your Employees Exercise While They Work

The benefits of regular exercise are well-known. So imagine what a couple of hours’ cycling could do for your employees’ long-term health.

Cycling while working is now a thing thanks to the DeskCycle by MagneTrainer.

It’s a great idea because you can train while you work. Like standing workstations, this innovation is a simple but effective solution to the sedentary-related health issues in modern day workplaces.

Play It Safe

Adding a bit of fun to your workplace activities will help boost your employees’ fitness levels and motivation. And you’ll have employees feeling mentally and physically refreshed so they’re more focused for work.

Time spent exercising is more than made up for in increased productivity.

It really does make sound business sense.

7 Unexpected Ways Anti-Fatigue Mats Boost Your Business

Australian Securities and Investments Commission conducted research which showed that the number one reason for business failure is inadequate cash flow. In simpler words, this means that businesses have more expenses than earnings.

Since you are a business owner, you already have your business plan. You have predicted your expenses and your revenue and everything should be going according to your plans.

You need to keep your eye on the market and make sure your sales are good.

However, there is another way to boost your business and that is to cut down your losses. There are some obvious, direct ways you can do this. Things like ensuring the lowest prices of your raw materials, if you are a manufacturer or being frugal with your recipes if you are a restaurant owner. You already know all about these.

Here is something you probably haven’t thought about. Anti fatigue mats can indirectly boost your business. By positioning them in critical places, you will shift the levers that will help you on the long run.

Read up on the 7 ways anti fatigue mats help your business grow:

1. Less Back-Related Injuries

A lot of back injuries that happen in the workplace are actually a consequence of prolonged standing. Standing means your joints suffer and your back carries the entire weight of your body for a significant number of hours. It all starts with your feet.

By placing a significant number of anti fatigue floor mats around your workplace, you will ensure that your employees are more comfortable and their backs hurt less.

How does this save you money? Just think about all those sick days that people have to take due to bad backs. They cost you money. With anti fatigue matting, there will be a lot less of those.

2. Quicker Service and Better Turnover

Quick service and a better turnover sound amazing, don’t they? These are especially important in retail businesses or in bars and restaurants. The quicker and more agile your servers are, the bigger your turnover will be.

However, tired and hurt servers cannot be that quick. A sore back and sore joints prevent them from doing their job the way they want to. Again, anti fatigue floor mats save the day.

Less stress on your employee backs and joints will make them quicker. That means a lot more coffees, drinks and meals served and, more importantly, paid for.

3. Reduced Number of Infections in Workplace

Your anti fatigue mats are also rubber backed mats. They stick to the surface very well and they help prevent the spread of bacteria and other germs all over your workplace. This is especially important for workplace hygiene.

Workplace hygiene is the only thing that stands between workplace epidemics and your employees. Anti fatigue matting is one of the strong barriers that help your hygienic efforts.

How does that save you money? Again – sick days. But that’s not all. If there is a talk that your restaurant, office, retail business or a bar is riddled with infections on a regular basis, your business will shut down instantly.

4. Less Slipping and Accidents

Here is another feature of your regular anti fatigue mat that is not its primary function. Anti fatigue matting has a hold grip to the floor, due to its material. A mat that doesn’t twist and turn and helps you avoid slipping which also helps you avoid sick days for your staff.

Anti fatigue matting also makes people stand strong on their feet and get less tired and reckless. That is another way how it prevents slips and accidents.

5. Reduced Workload for Your Cleaning Staff

Some businesses have cleaning staff that they hire on full-time basis. Others outsource these tasks to external companies. There are also those that simply delegate the cleaning duties to their otherwise appointed staff.

Wiping the floors and dusting the shelves is one thing. Taking care of the anti fatigue floor mats that have been used throughout the day is another.

By renting your anti fatigue matting from Alsco, you will reduce the workload for your cleaning staff as industrial-level cleaning is included in your rental price. This saves a lot on cleaning bills.

6. Boosted Employee Satisfaction

People like to work for successful companies. That helps them feel their work is meaningful, they worry less about their future and they are more satisfied in general.

If you manage to run a successful business, your employees will feel better and work better and that leads to more success. You just need to get that ball rolling.

Another thing that boosts employee satisfaction is good working conditions. If you install anti fatigue mats for those that spend hours standing, they sure will appreciate it.

Therefore, with anti fatigue mats, you end up with satisfied employees who become more productive and you earn more. Again, these mats are saving you money indirectly.

7. Improved Workplace Ambiance

It is not just your employees who enjoy a workplace that is well designed and properly equipped. Your customers, clients and other visitors will take your business more seriously if it looks professional.

Details like anti-fatigue matting are just the thing that separates an average business from a business that takes care of every detail. Decide which business you want to run and make sure your venues reflect your decision.

Renting your anti-fatigue mats is the best possible example of how by paying a price, you are actually earning money for your business. All these 7 benefits of the anti fatigue mats save you money in the long run.

In other words, purchasing these mats doesn’t mean that a sum of money will magically appear in your bank account. That is why it would not be the best idea to invest in them right away. A much better and a much more lucrative option is to rent them.

You should call Alsco and talk to our representatives. They will let you know what your monthly rental cost would be. This price includes the maintenance and regular industrial-level cleaning of these mats. Once you have those numbers, it would be easy to calculate how much money anti-fatigue mats are saving you. Call Alsco today.
